When Wal-Mart came to Hawaii, they chose The Harris Company to be their construction managers. The high cost of Hawaiian real estate caused Wal-Mart to deviate substantially from their prototype stores. The Waipahu store, shown above is a perfect example.
In order to generate the parking they require, the store had to be designed with roof-top parking. Inasmuch as the roof is generally used for air conditioning equipment, the store had to be modified to incorporate the equipment in the back of the store. This particular store incorporated a 25 foot retaining wall as the rear wall of the store.
